CHARACTER INFORMATION

Name: Kaoru Hitachiin
Age: 16
Subject taught: N/A
Canon: Ouran High School Host Club
Canon point: End of Episode 21

Personality:
Kaoru is one half of a set of twins, and is rarely ever away from his twin, Hikaru. As a pair, they think of themselves as “all that,” cool and unbeatable, especially when it comes to fascinating girls with their “twincest.” In actuality, they are utterly foolish. Their stupidity is particularly noticeable during the time when the Host Club visits Haruhi’s home. Due to her “commoner” economic status, the twins and Tamaki continually attempt not to ask her for anything. When Honey asks Haruhi if she would make them something for lunch, they chastise him for his suggestion. Later, they vocalize their regret that they hadn’t asked her themselves to make them lunch.
Another characteristic that is especially potent when Kaoru and Hikaru are together is their love of prank pulling. They mostly love to tease Tamaki and his feelings for Haruhi by continually making innuendoes regarding Haruhi. This trait is particularly potent during their “which one is Hikaru?” game and Haruhi instantly is able to tell them apart. The twins get all mad at each other based on Haruhi’s reasoning as to how she knows them apart, and constantly fight. Eventually, Haruhi screams at the twins that they better make up or she’ll never invite them over to her house (she was fairly adamant against any of the Host Club members from visiting her home). The Hitachiin brothers finally make up, revealing that their fighting was all a game, and immediately accept Haruhi’s offer to visit her. This invite drove Tamaki nuts, causing this prank to get “two birds with one stone”.

When not attached to Hikaru’s side (a rare thing, indeed), Kaoru is a fairly calm, level-headed guy who bases his decisions on logic as opposed to impulse, as is his brother’s ilk. A sensible, selfless bloke, he displays his greater level of maturity in contrast to his twin. Kaoru knows how to treat a person, as well as how to work together with other individuals, displaying his ease in a social setting. These traits make it less difficult for him to establish relationships with others, if he so chooses to attach to one other than Hikaru. During a visit with Haruhi and the rest of the Host Club, the group runs into a friend of Haruhi’s from Middle School, Arai, who confesses he had liked Haruhi a great deal. Hikaru, who has hidden feelings for Haruhi in canon, yells at him and storms out of the room. As Arai prepares to leave, Kaoru adopts the visage of his brother and publicly and formally apologizes for “his” brash behavior.

The most disturbing thought, and biggest fear, of Kaoru’s is the knowledge there will be a day when he can no longer be by Hikaru’s side as they are now. However, he does hope Hikaru will learn to, one day, think of others before himself.

Sample:
Kaoru awoke, groggy, from an exceedingly strange dream where he is running down a path with undefined boundaries. It was as though he was in a dark tunnel, and all color was washed away, leaving everything in grayscale. Running along the walls, like a moving picture, were memories, pieces of his life. Once in a while, Kaoru would focus on a particular scene as it went by, however, once it was gone, he promptly forgot everything having to do with that bit of his life.

Far ahead of him, Hikaru, the only thing with any color to it, was skipping and laughing. Periodically, he would turn his head back to look at Kaoru, speaking inaudibly and gesturing for Kaoru to join him. Kaoru, always loving being at his brother’s side, changed his leisurely gait into an all out sprint, frantically desperate to get to his brother. “Hikaru! Hikaru, wait up!” He called out. Hikaru continued to laugh and make his way down the tunnel. Ever so slowly, he started to gain on his brother. “Finally, Brother., I’ve found you.” Kaoru reached his hand forward to grasp at his gay brother, but the instant before he touched Hikaru, the scene before him changed.

Sleeping while lounging on an uncomfortable chair is difficult to do. Having that chair on a moving train makes it even more-so uncomfortable. To maintain some modicum of luxury in such a situation, one must consistently toss, turn, and reposition. During one of those repositioning moves, Kaoru was awoken. Groping beside him, thinking he was still in his bed at home, he reached for his brother. Shock beginning to set in at the lack of is brother, the train shudders to a complete halt, causing full consciousness to beset Kaoru. He looked around, wondering how in the world he could be on such a lavish train. Slowly standing (his body was stiff from curling in the chair), Kaoru made his way up and down the train car, coming to the realization that Hikaru wasn’t there. Kaoru couldn’t remember the last time he had seen his brother, but did have an inkling that he had been gone for a while from his home. Remembering his dream, he had a feeling he would see his brother soon.
